HISTORY
The Intercourse Library began in a one-room schoolhouse that had been vacant for many years. In 1975, the school district gave the Lions Club permission to use the schoolhouse for a reading center. The 900-square-foot building was staffed by volunteers, and materials were provided by Lancaster Public Library. In 1989, it became an independent library and was renamed Intercourse Public Library. By the early 2000s, as the collection grew to roughly 21,000 items, it was clear that the library had outgrown the space and a larger facility was needed. Donations from patrons, local businesses, and three townships resulted in a new 9,500-square-foot building that opened in 2007.

A group comprised of Board members, staff, and some truly dedicated patrons sought to preserve the legacy of the library’s beginnings. In 2012, an exact replica of the schoolhouse was constructed as an addition to the new library facility. A generous patron donated the entire cost of the project, with only one proviso. The endowment stipulated that the addition be named after the long-standing library director, Margaret Perella, who had worked tirelessly to promote and expand the library. The Perella Schoolhouse functions as a space for library programs and events. Additionally, it provides revenue as it is rented out regularly to the public. While it is generally used for meetings and presentations by local businesses, it has also been the site of countless birthday parties, bridal showers, baby showers, and even one wedding reception! The original schoolhouse has not moved. It is located on the corner of Old Philadelphia Pike (RTE. 340) and Hollander Road.

RENTAL
The Perella Schoolhouse at Intercourse Library is available for rent. The cost to rent the space itself is $100.00 a day (Mon-Fri) and $150.00 a day on the weekend. For use of the projector and sound equipment it will be an additional charge of $25. This space is only available to be rented for the daily rate.
